Being from the south I’ve never heard of Turnip and Carrots. We moved to Maine 19 years ago and that’s when I tried it for the first time. We went to my in-law’s camp to celebrate Labor Day with a fun filled day of family and some wonderfully delicious array of food. That’s when I tried turnips and carrots for the first time and was it ever tasty! I grew up eating turnips and turnips greens as a dish, but never combined the two. I was deliciously surprised by the combination of the two. The sweet bitterness of the turnip and the sweetness of the carrots with real butter is a scrumptious bite of pure goodness.

At first I thought she (mother in law) was crazy when she brought out this large round vegetable and told me it was a turnip. I always called the large one’s rutabagas, not turnips. According to my mother-in-law I’ve was wrong all these years! I think it depends on where you grow up on what you call them. Now that I’m considered a southern transplanted in the north (by my husband’s family), I have to call them by their rightful name.

I like to boil mine until till they are almost falling apart because I liked them whipped together without all the little lumps. This way the two veggies marry together very well. I also love to use real butter, none of the fake stuff around here. It’s much better for you.
